How Were Old Home Movies Made?

How Were Old Home Movies Made?

When thinking of your child birthday parties or holidays, you may recall your parents bringing out the bulky film camera to capture the fun moments. The embarrassing vacation video of you and your siblings is stored in the basement of your parent’s house along with other precious memories you will always cherish. It’s important to note that film does not last forever and over time will start to deteriorate, losing sound and picture quality as the years go on.

Choosing to get old film digitized will preserve these memories forever without a worry! With today’s technology film is no longer required due to smartphones and digital cameras. Prior to VHS and tapes and camcorders, you may find yourself wondering, how were home movies made back in the day?

16MM Format

By the late 1920’s, 16mm film was a popular choice for American film production. This format was generally used for non-theatrical film making, such as education or low-budget motion pictures. It also existed as a well-known choice for amateur or homemade movie-making formats for several decades, although it was a high price to pay for most average Americans. As technology continued to advance, the camera equipment and film itself decreased in price and became more affordable. Soon after 16mm film was the introduction to 8mm film, which was smaller and cheaper.

8MM Format and Super 8MM Film

The standard 8mm was developed by the Kodak Company as a way for families to create a home movie that was less expensive than 16mm film. This film was cheaper, more accessible, and much smaller which decreased the equipment size. While 8mm stuck around for several decades, super 8mm film was then introduced in the mid-1960’s which offered a better image and sound quality than 8mm film. The images were clearer and the cartridges were easier to load into the camera, making it a more appealing option. Super 8mm film became a home movie-making staple in America before the camcorder were created in the 1980’s.

While film found in your parent’s house should be treasured, it should also be updated to match today’s technology. Making the decision to go digital will ensure those memories are kept for years to come. Don’t worry, you can still keep the reels and film itself after the digitization process to show generations the history of film!

We don’t often think about our parents being young, but they were a kid once, too! What better way to remind them of their care-free selves than surprising them with digitized memories? Taking the time to go through their old photos tucked away in the basement closet will show your love and interest in their childhood, and is bound to leave a touching impression. Once you have gathered your photos and cleaned off the dust, you are ready to send them to a professional digitization service! Once you receive the digitized photos, you can then easily print them and organize the photos in a scrapbook.

Anniversary Footage for Grandparents

Chances are, your grandparents have mountains of footage tucked away in their house, deteriorating as the years go on. Once you receive the digitized copies of the footage, perhaps edit a small video of your grandparents most precious moments, such as their wedding or anniversaries!

What is the Lifespan of Film?

Unfortunately, film is not eternal and overtime will start to deteriorate, putting your loving memories at risk for being lost. So, what is the lifespan of film? There are many factors that alter the lifespan of media, such as how it is stored and handled. Two biggest components that affects film are significant temperature changes and extremely high or low humidity, which is why it is important to store media in a climate controlled environment. Although keeping film and photos in a safe box, that doesn’t mean they should stay in your storage closet forever.

What Causes Film to Age?

After only 15 years, film will start to deteriorate, causing audio and video quality to degrade. This doesn’t mean your media is completely ruined, you will only start to notice a lower quality in pictures or a muted coloring. As mentioned previously, this is often a result of being exposed to years moisture and temperature changes, which causes the acetate base layer to slowly degrade. The color decay will show an overly red or blue rather than the original color palette. As the acetate continues to decompose, you may notice a smell similar to vinegar, which means acetate acid has reached the film base. If you notice this happening to your film, we suggest digitizing immediately to preserve your memories before they are completely deteriorated.

Let’s Get Digitized!

If you’re still weary about handing over your memories to be upgraded to an mp3 file or flash drive, we completely understand the trust that comes along. How Digital Video Transfer Works
How Digital Video Transfer Works

Transferring old tapes or videos digitally is becoming a popular phenomena as technology continues to rise. Many may be unaware of the ability to preserve the old box of memories in their basement usually consisting of old film, videos, photos, or audio. In this box holds precious moments once shared with friends and family, and is something that should be remembered forever. Unfortunately, with time comes deterioration of these old tapes then posing a threat to ruining loved memories. With today’s technology we are able to take old photos or videos and digitize them so they can me shared and passed down for years to come. Stay tuned as we dive into what it means to digitize and how digital video transfers work!

What is Digitization?

Digitization services preserves old memories captured on tape and transfers them to a digital file which allows them to perform on today’s technology. This means 8mm film can be cleaned and converted to a digital DVD format or a hard drive, giving you a sense of security of knowing your memories can last a lifetime.

At Keepsake Solutions, we offer a number of digitized services such as:

1. Tape Transfer

VHS tapes are degrading faster than ever, which is why we are proud to offer a transfer service from tape to DVD to preserve their quality and to share with generations to come.

2. Film Transfer

Unfortunately, media such as 8mm, super 8, or 16mm was not built to last forever. Don’t take the chance of your film deteriorating before it’s too late. This process starts by cleaning and prepping the film to digitally scan the film frame-by-frame to ensure the highest quality possible. An expert editor then color corrects the film to bring back the original color, leaving you with a smile on your face.

3. Slides

We treat slides as if each is truly unique, ensuring every scan turns out perfectly. Each individual slide is inspected for scratches and cleaned, where we then scan one-by-one to crop and color correct the image. It is then saved as a high quality .jpg file for digital use.

4. Photos

Do you have negative photos lying around? We hand check and digitally preserve your photos to bring new life to those treasured memories.

5. Audio

Don’t let your favorite tunes go to waste! Rather than tape decks, cars now come with bluetooth speakers and high-tech features that rule out the past. Our team can easily transfer cassette tapes, vinyl records, and reel-to-reel tapes to high quality audio files or CDs.

How to Prepare Your Film for Digitization
How to Prepare Your Film for Digitization

As time passes, new memories are documented as happy times are shared by all. With each graduation celebration, birthday party, wedding, or valuable moments comes an opportunity to hold those precious moments forever. Although it’s more accessible to capture photos or videos in today’s time, it’s important to not forget the box of memories holding old photos and tapes of your loved ones past. Choosing to get old film digitized will promise a lifelong security, while avoiding deterioration or heat damage. Learning how to prepare your film for digitization will prep those memories for the 21st century and leave you with beautiful results.

First, Say Goodbye to Dust

The first step to preparing old film to be digitized is to get them clean and clear of dust. The most efficient way to do this is to use a canned air compressor, allowing you to not physically blow on the film to avoid saliva. This can also be done with a lint-free cotton cloth to clear the tape of oils or fingerprints. Using gloves for both of these options will help the process go smooth and leave them squeaky clean.

Second, Give A Dab of Alcohol

It’s important to not go overboard with this step, as you only need a small dab of 98% Isopropyl alcohol on a Q-tip to wipe away and leftover smudges. Using an alcohol with a lower percentage may streak marks and will not evaporate quickly, leaving your film to cause a reaction to the alcohol.

Third, Let it Dry and Dust Again

After allowing the alcohol to break down the oils and completely dry, we advice you wipe the tape down one more time with a lint-free cloth. When drying the tapes, make sure the film is completely dry before rolling it back into the tape, as this could cause the film to stick together resulting in damage.

No matter how dirty you find your old tapes, performing these three simple steps will make the digitize process an absolute success. These tapes hold moments in life that were once shared and wanted to be remembered. Taking proper actions to care for their value will pay in the long run!

Why You Should Avoid Heat Damage to Your Tapes

VHS tapes are a common memory we all share, full of embarrassing home videos and memorable days from the past. These are moments you want to cherish forever, which is why it is important to properly store your VHS tapes, keeping them from water damage as well as heat damage. With summer in full swing, attics and storage areas can easily get overheated causing potential damage to your tapes. So, what happens when your tapes are exposed to the harsh sun rays? Stay tuned for why you should avoid heat damage to your tapes, which could potentially destroy years worth of memories and happy times.

Deterioration

Surprisingly, VHS tapes are pretty resilient when exposed to the elements, but should still be treated with care. Tapes can safely be stored in a hot environment, as long as it is temporary and the space is dry. After a long exposure to a hot, humid environment the tape’s deterioration will start to develop. The discoloration of the tape means a deterioration of both the vision and audio of the film.

Digitized Tape Transfer

Avoid your VHS tapes degrading by making the decision to get them digitized! Digital tape transfers are becoming more popular as families hold value in preserving their old memories. Transferring your tape memories to a DVD or digital file will preserve the quality and give you the ability to share with generations to come. At Keepsake Solutions, we make the transition of converting your videos to DVDs or flash drive effortlessly.
